Little hands learn to write long before they write their first word.

Before letters and numbers come the little movements that make writing possible—lines, curves, circles, waves, zigzags and spirals.

My Patterns Book is a 125-page printable activity book for children aged 3+, designed to make those important early drawing and pre-writing movements feel like play rather than practice. Children are shown a pattern and encouraged to reproduce it inside familiar pictures, while simple “I see…” sentences introduce an early language and reading element too.

What Is My Patterns Book About?

Instead of repeatedly tracing lines on an empty page, children get to use patterns to complete and decorate pictures.

They might draw colourful patterns on a ball, add lines to balloons, make spirals on a bus, create spots on a dog, add bubbles around a fish or draw grass beneath a bush. Some activities go a little further by asking children to add details to the picture, such as a road beneath a bus or a bowl of milk for a cat.

This gives pattern practice a purpose—and gives little learners plenty of opportunities to experiment with pencils, crayons and colours.

More Than Pattern Practice

There is also a simple early-language component built into the activities.

Each page uses short sentences such as “I see a ball,” “I see a dog,” or “I see a fish.” The instructions encourage an adult to read the sentence, then let the child repeat it while pointing to the words. Later activities also encourage children to identify pictures and words, say sentences and think about the beginning sound of a word.

So while those little fingers are busy drawing, children can also practice speaking, vocabulary, word awareness and early reading behaviors. Sneaky learning—the best kind. 😉

Why Parents and Teachers Will Love It

Young children don't necessarily need another worksheet that feels like a worksheet.

They need opportunities to draw, talk, notice, repeat, experiment and enjoy themselves.

That philosophy is built directly into the resource: the instructions describe it as a FUN booklet and specifically encourage adults to give children positive feedback while they work.

That makes My Patterns Book useful for:

  • Preschool and early-years classrooms
  • Homeschool learning
  • Fine motor practice
  • Pre-writing preparation
  • Morning or independent work
  • Quiet-time activities
  • Early literacy reinforcement
  • Extra practice at home
