Turn reading practice into a treasure hunt where every hidden word is a little victory waiting to be discovered.

Recognizing words, noticing letter patterns and building vocabulary all take practice. But that practice doesn’t always have to look like traditional schoolwork.

Find the Words is a 14-page printable PDF activity book for children aged 7 years and older, filled with themed word searches that encourage children to look carefully, recognize familiar words and find them hidden among other letters.

With pictures to provide visual clues and a variety of familiar themes, children can practice important literacy skills while enjoying the challenge of finding each hidden word.

What’s Inside?

The booklet contains 10 themed word-search activity pages, covering a wide variety of vocabulary children may already know or be learning.

Each activity provides a selection of words for children to find in the letter grid. Many of the words are accompanied by clear black-and-white pictures, helping children connect the written vocabulary with a visual representation.

The themes include:

  • Small animals and creatures: owl, bee, ant, duck, snail, bird, frog and hare
  • Farm and familiar animals: pig, dog, horse, cow, sheep, cat, hamster and snake
  • Wild animals: elephant, deer, bear, lion, snake, ape and cheetah
  • Sea life: see star, dolphin, crab, fish, whale, shark and shell
  • Fruit: cherry, grapes, banana, pear, apple, kiwi and peach
  • Vegetables and food: tomato, avocado, pumpkin, carrot, broccoli, onion, corn and garlic
  • Transport: truck, plane, car, bicycle, boat, bus and train
  • Kitchen items: fork, plate, knife, bowl, spoon and glass
  • Home vocabulary: table, bath, bed, chair, couch and rug
  • Nature: rain, leaf, tree, flower, sun, water and earth

This themed approach helps children work with groups of related words rather than simply searching for a random collection of vocabulary.

How Does It Work?

Each page begins with the question: “Can you see any of the hidden words?”

Children look at the target words and then search through the large letter grid to find them.

Once they discover a word, they are encouraged to colour each word with a different coloured pencil. This makes it easier to see which words have already been found while adding a colourful, hands-on element to the activity.

The black-and-white pictures at the top of the pages can also be coloured, giving children something creative to enjoy alongside the word-search challenge.

Why Teachers and Parents Will Love It

A word search may look like a simple puzzle, but a child has to do quite a bit of thinking to find the answer.

They need to look at the target word, notice its letters, remember the sequence and then scan through a grid filled with distracting letters until they recognize the same pattern.

That makes Find the Words an enjoyable way to provide additional practice with word recognition, vocabulary and visual scanning.

The pictures are another useful feature. Instead of presenting children with words alone, many of the target words are paired with illustrations. A child can see the picture of a banana, read the word banana, and then search for that same sequence of letters in the grid.

For teachers, the different themes also make it easy to choose pages that complement a classroom topic. Learning about transport? Print the transport page. Working with fruit and vegetables? There are dedicated activities for both.

For parents and homeschoolers, the booklet provides ready-to-print literacy activities that children can complete at their own pace.
